Weed Abatement Guidelines

The image shows a pamphlet with wildfire preparedness tips, including a checklist for creating defensible space and evacuation advice.

All structures such as dwellings, barns, storage buildings, stored vehicles, wood fences, etc., must be provided with a 30-foot firebreak. This 30 feet of defensible space can be provided by one of the
following methods:

  • Green belts, such as lawns or fire-resistive landscaping.
  • Discing weeds (minimum of three passes).
  • Mowing weeds and then raking away dry grass (try to get to bare dirt).

Vacant parcels overgrown with weeds present a significant threat to adjacent structures and must be abated. This can be accomplished by one of the following methods:

  • Mowing weeds and then raking away the debris/grass.
  • Discing weeds (minimum of three passes).

Note: Large parcels (exceeding 2 acres) may only be required to provide a 30-foot firebreak around the perimeter.

Vacant parcels adjacent to residential subdivisions that have wood-shake shingle roofs must provide a 60-foot firebreak along the entire length of property abutting the subdivision.

Please be aware that the fire hazard shall remain abated through the month of October.  Should the weeds/grass grow back beyond 6 inches in height, re-cut to below 2 inches.
